Masjid an-Nabawi, established by Prophet Muhammad
in Medina, served as the foundational center for the development of the early
Islamic society. It was not merely a place of worship; rather, it functioned as
a comprehensive social, educational, and administrative institution from which
the organization and moral training of the Muslim community were carried out.
Through Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet ﷺ established a
strong bond of brotherhood between the Muhājirūn (the emigrants from Makkah)
and the Anṣār (the residents of Madinah), an event historically known as
Brotherhood of Medina. This initiative strengthened unity, cooperation, and
social harmony within the newly formed Muslim community.
Furthermore, the mosque included the institution
of Aṣḥāb al-Ṣuffah, where poor and homeless companions were provided with
accommodation, education, and moral training. Masjid an-Nabawi also functioned
as a center for governance, consultation, judicial decisions, and community
welfare.
Through this system, charitable activities such as
the distribution of zakāt and charity, assistance to travelers, and support for
the needy were organized. In this way, Masjid an-Nabawi nurtured unity, ethical
development, and collective responsibility among Muslims.
In summary, the model of Masjid an-Nabawi represented
a comprehensive system that integrated worship with education, social welfare,
and community building, ultimately establishing a strong and cohesive Islamic
society.
